PREAMBLE:

The ancestors of the Knanaya community immigrated from the region of South Mesopotamian to the Kodugalloor region of Kerala State, India in AD 345. They were of Jewish Christian ancestry, and by reason of their Jewish genealogical descent in their old country and in the context of the caste-based social structure of the new country, they happened to form themselves into an endogenous ethnic community, which came to be known as the Knanaya Catholic community.

In the 1970s, large number of Knanaya laity immigrated to the United States in search of better jobs, life, and better prospects for future generations. As the community grew, the Knanaya population spread to different parts of the U.S.A. In the state of California, many families initially moved and settled in San Jose, CA region and as the community grew it spread to the surrounding cities and regions.

The first Knanaya family moved to the greater Sacramento region in 1986, and slowly over the years, more Knanaya families settled in the Sacramento area. Initially, the Sacramento community was part of the San Jose Knanaya association and participated in the association’s events and attended Holy Mass provided by the association. But as the Sacramento community grew, and the long commute to San Jose proved to be difficult to do on a regular basis, it was decided that there was a need for a Sacramento Knanaya association to properly represent and organize the population of Sacramento Knanaya Catholics. In November, 2018, the Sacramento Knanaya Catholic Congress (SKCC) was founded and it was officially inaugurated on February 16, 2019. Simultaneously, the Knanaya Catholic Women’s Forum of Sacramento (KCWFS) was formed as a sub-organization of Sacramento Knanaya Catholic Congress, with the theme of “women empowering women” and to help cultivate and maintain the Knanaya faith, values, and traditions among the Knanaya Catholic women live in Sacramento area.
